Hey, I'm MarisaBear and I'm 20 years young.
How long have you been natural?
By June, I'll be natural two years. It doesn't even feel like it though; the time flies by.
What inspired you to go natural?
I didn't go natural on purpose. It wasn't on my mind at all but those sneaky curls just attacked me. My last relaxer was the summer of 2012 when I started college. I had a bond in and I made that it last until August. For fall semester, a friend of mine sewed in weave for me and I kept that until November. So every little break I got, I got my hair done and the periods in between I made the hairstyle last for months. I didn't realize I was natural until January of 2013. Since my hair was in transition phase, I couldn't really get a feel of the length or texture. I was kind of fascinated with the thought of being natural so I let it grow out and eventually cut my relaxed ends. Also during that time I was becoming a lot more pro black so that helped solidify my decision.
Describe your hair?
Describe my hair.....ok. I'll say I have low porosity simply because I did the water test with my hair strands and they all floated....(except one but I kind of forced it down so idk.) It's high in density and my hair is medium. (In the middle is course and fine.) It's thick and I have different curls in different places so I don't bother hair typing. It SHRINKS when wet. I mean SHRINK. It gets really rough and hard to manage if after washing I let my hair dry without moisturizing it.

How do you maintain your mane?
I don't have a specific hair regimen......don't kill me. I'm really lazy so even if I started one I wouldn't keep up with it. When I'm at home, my hair is either braided or under a cap. I rarely comb or detangle it when dry. I have less breakage when I comb it while it's wet. Braid outs and twist outs are my go to styles. I recently started doing braid outs on dry hair and it was a shocker to me. I didn't know my hair was that big or long but it was a pleasant surprise. I deep condition once in a blue moon and I almost never shampoo. I mostly co-wash and I don't blow dry unless my braids are still wet in the morning.
What does your hair like? Dislike?
My hair hates Shea butter. The butter just sits there. I don't use any other hair butters. My hair seems to like pomades, coconut oil, and castor oil (I use the dark one I get from Haiti.) Oddly enough, my hair likes salt water. Whenever I go to the beach, my hair is its softest and the curls are really defined even though salt is supposed to dry out your hair. I plan on trying to add salt to my conditioner to see how my hair reacts
What mistakes have you made in your journey?
My biggest mistakes was, and still is, not taking care of my hair like I should. I only make sure it's moisturized when I plan on doing a braid out. I haven't trimmed my hair yet and I have heat damage in the front from flat ironing my leave out too much. Despite the fact my hair is a soldier, I've managed to retain length and have healthy hair. I just try to imagine where it could be if I took better care of it.
