About JumiBearz
"What in the world is a Jumi Bear??" one might ask. To retell the story of my amusing nickname, one would have to first delve into the Yoruba culture. My first name is Jumoké (which I more commonly go by) and according to my culture, it means "someone that everyone cares for and adores." Pretty sweet, huh? Well, also according to my culture my nickname is traditionally spelled "Jummy" but pronounced joo-mee. I carried this nickname and it's unique spelling with me throughout grade school where I was constantly badgered by kids and teachers alike about the bizarre phonetics of my name. It came to a point that I got so fed up with the constant mispronunciation of my name and being referred to as "Juh-Me" that in seventh grade I dropped the second "m" and became re-known as "Jumy." By eight grade I wanted to spice it up again so I swapped the "y" for an "i" and the rest is pretty much history. Although nowadays most people know me as "Jumi" there are some childhood friends of mine who have nostalgic memories of the days when my name was spelled "Jummy" and have always referred to me as "Jummy Bears." The nickname was cute and creative to me so I stuck with it and here we are today. :)
